Throughout this year we have had many lectures based on a variety of subjects such as: Surrealism, German Expressionism, Bauhaus, DADA and Art Nouveau. Though through these I found this lecture link to be most helpful(https://studentcentral.brighton.ac.uk/webapps/blackboard/execute/content/file?cmd=view&content_id=_2872494_1&course_id=_99672_1&framesetWrapped=true). This lecture was particularly helpful for the Visions Of The Future essay as it covered many things I wanted to include in my essay and was one of the reasons why I was lenient to the essay question. I have also become highly interested in the DADA movement and how other lectures intertwined with that movement such as German Expressionism and Surrealism. One of my favourite lectures was focused on the Dada movement which is one of the most artistic movements ever seen, marked mainly for its mockery of nationalistic and materialistic nature and still proves to this day that it had a powerful influence on contemporary artists. All members of Dada oppose all the normality of bourgeois culture claiming that “Dada is anti-Dada”. It has had such a large impact on modern contemporary studio practice and will be analysed on the specific influences on modern artists from founding Dada members. This second essay was about Utopian and Dystopian futures, I focused a few examples but mainly focused on WALL-E and its Dystopian features such as the possible extinction of the human race and the vitality of restoring the earth. Along with a movie with Utopian features such as the garden portrayed in 'The Secret Garden' and how Utopian styled movies are not as popular as Dystopian along with the possible reasons why and the movies theories against our own possible future.

This video is a section from the movie 'Metropolis'. This is the Utopian scene I comment on in my essay where you see the characters having fun In the garden. This youtube video also helped as it helped me understand the concept behind the movie. This also helped me understand how certain aspects of the movie can be seen in a dystopian context for example the creation behind the ships evil robotic controller 'Otto'. Below is the books I used as research for the 'Visions Of The Future' essay. I also used a variety of online sources and theories. Though my understanding of these concepts came from studying the movies and trying to catch all the detail within the movies as well as reading their written versions, as I felt this gave me more detail on their theories. |
