After producing my final work in class I was given some feedback from Paul. I found this very helpful as it let me know if my first full animation was successful or not. I am happy with my feedback and agreed with my review, If I was to redo this I would of used a more advanced software like After Effects, as this was predominately produced in Photoshop which is very tedious and can produce a lot of mistakes. I have become a lot more skilled in After Effects these past few weeks and think that this would of been very helpful in this project. Although this was a challenge creating this in Photoshop I found it to be very enjoyable as I was able to combine my interests like American Horror Story and moving image and allocate its relevance within the brief.

Below is my final animation of 1.10 minutes, In this animation I used the combination of kinetic typography and audio made using GarageBand to produce a visual representation of The Story of the Piggy Man. I used four fonts throughout this project which were American Typewriter, Pig by Marcio Hirosse, Pigae by Utopia and Bloody by James Fordyce, these fonts represented the sinister story by combining a bold yet creepy feel, being relevant to the context of the narration and keeping up with the horror spoken within the animation. I used only a few colours which were pink/salmon to represent the colour of a pig, red to represent blood and white/black as the contrast colours. I think it is successful to use minimal colours within the animation as it relates every section in the story to each other and keeps the animation consistent. The Soundtrack I have made using Garage band includes these three videos below, I have remixed them to a soundtrack that follows my final animation. I wanted to originally use the classic story of the Piggy man as it tells the story of what originally captivated me into choosing this option, I then wanted to use the eary sounds of the American Horror Story theme song as an underlay of the vocals to excentuate the darkness of the animation. Lastly I used a video taken from the 2010 pig noise contest as I found some of the sounds to be extremely discomforting and thought this would help my animation become more realistic to the story I was trying to tell.
The Story of the Piggy ManAmerican Horror Story is a well known horror, thriller series on Netflix, it features many well known actors/actresses and is one of my all time favourite tv series. When thinking of unlikely legends I began thinking of the story of the Piggy Man, this story is mentioned in season one of AHS. A man seeking counselling tells the legend in one of his therapy sessions stating the story of the Piggy Man - I have written out the monologue below taken from the film which is also attached below.
To furhur my research I have looked at videos that portray successful forms of kinetic typography. Below I have critiques how I found them helpful and what I have taken from them to produce in my own work.
Looking into examples of kinetic typography I noticed many of them were produced very similar, they consisted of moving type over words and seemed very repetitive. I do not want to use this style within my word, although I think it is good to emphasise words using type at times I do not want my animation to just be completely focused on this. I have given examples below of this type of moving type.
I want to look at different options to base my animation around, firstly looking into fairytales and different takes of them, for example in 2014 a film called Malificent was aired in cinemas, this film was a retold story of the classic Disney film 'sleeping beauty'. The new version of it was shown from the evil witches side, showing her back story and relation to the current king and why she cursed their newborn baby Aroura in the first place, to inevitably falling in love with the child as a mother would and breaking the curse with a kiss. The story retold really spoke to me and showed the darker side to classic fairytales , from watching this film I wanted to see if there was other forms of fairytales that were also retold. Looking into retold stories I found a youtube channel called 'TheThings' their videos tell the traditional fairytales compared to the child friendly versions that everyone seems to know. Below it tells the Brothers Grim original version of the story of Cinderella and how emotional and devastating the story truly is. I feel looking at the darker side of these is something that will later help when then animating as I feel like I can create a more interesting piece when the story is so intriguing. I also have attached a link to the retold story of Anastasia, although the film shows a lot of tragedy in the young princesses life it is no where near as much suffering as the real life Anastasia had to go through, with her and her family being massacured in their royal palace basement, as this is on of the favourite all time films I wanted to mention it, and although it is one I know very well I feel like I would like to look into myths and legends before choosing my final choice for my topic.
Next I started to look into myths and legends, Starting with the hookman- this legend I have heard of a few times through social media discussing the chilling thriller. This legend is one I feel I could work with as I feel like I could manipulate the sounds of hooks over the typography. Although I like this idea I want to keep searching to see if I can find something a little more unique, so that I can retell a more underrated story. The next myth I am looking into is Bloody Mary, this folklore legend has been around for centeries and has had many films made from the myth. This is a very well know legend and I think retelling this story would be an interesting topic. I want to manipulate how I can use text only to create images. Below is examples of something I would like to work on by combining words to create an overall image, I feel this will be successful as it allows me to capture image with only text and can work to my advantage.
Starting off this project I will be looking at a variety of fairytales, myths and legends. As this project will be focusing on kinetic typography I want to look at ways I can covey a story which uses music, vocals and a narrative and only moving type. My initial research and previous knowledge of kinetic type traditionally is the idea of text moving constantly over words- this is difficult to stray away from and I feel I will need to look into less obvious forms of examples to learn how I can create something that doesn't follow the sterotypical samples. Below I have attached examples of videos which appeared from my first research into kinetic typography, from these videos I have learnt that using solely text will be difficult as it isn't done often, or very well. Initially I will look at a variety of options of ideas however I am leaning more towards something creepy/scary due to the fact I feel I will be able to have fun manipulating the text more. I think this project will allow me to experiment more with motion graphics and create something that doesn't nessacerily follow previous examples of moving type.
The Brief: Your brief is to create a narrative that references fairy tales, myths, fables or legends (either ancient or modern) or urban myths, and to present them a new and innovative way. You can use an existing story, or imagine a new one – it’s up to you.
Designers: Words only. We would like you to explore the use of kinetic typography to present your story, as animation. Consider typographic style, colour, scale, sequence, pace, sound and layout. You can use an existing typeface or create your own. You’ll need to edit the story to the key scenes, choose your words and phrases carefully, and explore different ways to keep the audience engaged and reading. How will you tell a story using text alone? Don’t forget that text can act as image too Outcome: A short animation, with sound, created using the moving image methodology of your choice. (Length: 1-3 minutes). Plus: research, storyboards, and development. |
