This is a video taken of 'Neon Noel 2017' in Eastbourne. I went to visit this and it was a real experience seeing it live. Looking at the building I can see my elements worked well with the buildings structure I feel from looking at previous projections it was one of my main focuses and is vital to the reason the animation worked out so well. My animation is shown at 3:40 - 4:04, I created my animation keeping in mind it needed to transition into another animation, because of this I made a start/end which had easy transitions to flow into the next animation. At the end of my animation the boy jumps into Santa's sleigh and he flies off, the words "You Win" appear allowing the audience that it is the end of that animation and the next one is now to start, I feel this was a successful ending and worked well with the next animation shown. If I was to change anything I would of dimmed the lights on the side of the building more, as my animation was predominately black and red I feel it would of had more attention on the tower if they were not as bright. Overall I am happy with how my work performed and although I had to overcome some complications I feel it has allowed me to see more of my potential as a designer especially in animation.

Designs Below are two images of my final design, these are stills of my animation and as you can see I have carefully placed my elements on the building in relation to how the real structure of the tower. I have also added a video of my animation above which was projected onto the Eastbourne Tower. SoundAnother important factor to remember is sound, below are two examples of where sound is used in projections to a successful high standard. These videos were originally shown to us in our lecture with Jim Hobbs and I believe it has allowed me to see how I can sync up certain movements to sound.
Below are three audio clips I have decided to choose from to have over my animation. Looking into the style of my animation I have decided to choose Jingle Bells as it has more of an upbeat/quick pace compared two last Christmas and deck the halls, and I feel this will be the one which runs along my animation best.
Assets Boy ( Tim )- This character was designed using bold contrast colours and is created from two images. When the images quickly change it gives off the idea that the boy is running. Elf - The elf is a simple design using a bold red and green, I have designed them two look as if they are bobbing with excitement so throughout the animation they have more life to them. Portal- The portal is created based off the design of candy canes. The animation is made up of 4 different sections which shows the portal opening and closing. Santa & Sleigh- I have designed this as one asset as they never need to come apart. The sleigh and sack are one individual EPS image and Santa has been added behind and combined in a group. Tree- The Tree was designed as an EPS in illustrator. The lights on the tree changes in colours from red, yellow and blue to give the lights a twinkling effect. Yeti- The Yeti was created in a icy blue tone, as traditionally they are white though felt like it would be seen more if it was this tone rather than white. He has two movements which allow him to appear as if he is running. Present- The present is a still image and will be animated within the software rather than having different moving versions of it. Stairs- The stairs will be used within the buildings structure and will allow the boy get to the portal to the next scene. Cookie- The cookie will be used as a 'power up' element. These are found in many games and are used as a bonus to players by helping them in some form to improve their score in the game. Visiting West End Studios
Portal/Final LevelThe last level also the top of the tower will consist of a circle portal shaped as a candy lollipop head. This opens at the beginning to let Santa appear at the top of the tower and will close back up. Towards the end of the animation the boy shall jump into the sleigh with Santa and fly off therefore winning the game. Level ThreeLevel Three will include the yeti monster who chases the boy across the building to only disappear once the boy jumps off screen. The boy will be seen running up the tower stairs back up to the portal. Level One/TwoBelow are the examples of how each level will be planned out. First level of the platform will consist of the boy walking along to climb up the tree to get to level two, on his way he will grab the cookie and grow quickly shrinking down to normal size. Level Two the boy shall move across the conveyor belt along with the presents and once he reaches the end he shall climb the stacked presents to level three . My IdeaLooking into cartoon styled animation I have focused on themes such as Super Mario and Adventure Elf, I have sketched and digitally drafted my design with the idea it will move up the building. I have chosen my assets from careful consideration on how I can build to the top of the tower as well as what can be used for the boy to interact with. Above are some simple sketches on how the building will be laid out, as the bottom of the tower will have lights and equipments I have started the level a little higher so none of it will be missed. From my research I have found platform games are highly popular and have chosen assets to be used within my animation. Chosen Assets Christmas Tree Presents Elf Yeti Stairs Conveyor Belt Santa + Sleigh Portal Boy Cookie Colour
The traditional 8 BIT consists of it's assets being pixelated. However, I wanted to mix non pixel assets along with the style of how 8bits move. This focuses on the assets moving step by step in a stop animation, from our lecture with Jim we found out that slower movements tend to work better on projection mapping and therefore I feel this style will work best. Looking into the kind of graphics I focused on a old game I once played when I was a child called 'Adventure Elf', the game consists of a little elf who runs around these brick styled houses collecting points through candy and cookies. He can loose a life by jumping to far down which happens often considering he has to jump to move up the buildings. I want to create my animation also from the bottom of the tower building to the top using each level as a round of the game. I have decided to use items that consist within this game such as presents, elves, cookies and candy styled building elements to promote the Christmas theme. The Super Mario Bros was released in 1985 and has the most worldwide recognized gaming characters. The game is a platform video game developed and published by Nintendo and is the traditional game most people think of when thinking of a video/Nintendo game. It's popularity with the public will allow my style to be instantly recognizable and as the audience is for all ages, many people will relate due to it still being a well played game in 2017/18.
Jim Hobbs LectureStarting off this project we were visited by Jim Hobbs, him being a designer he was able to give us ideas on what does/doesn't work well as his worked with projection mapping before. In this lecture we were shown examples of projection mappings projects he has been involved with which also included student work. This was very helpful as it allowed me to see what colours and elements work on large buildings. Below is a list of what we found from watching examples of projection mapping and also what doesn't work so well. What works best for projection mapping •Shadows •High Contrast/Bright Colours •Textures (actual/modeled) •Use of Architecture (Doors, Windows, Ledges) •Simple Text/Outlines •Animations with simple movements What does not work well
Below are the projections Jim has been involved in. From watching these I have been able to see how well certain colours work and as this is a Christmas based theme I will focus on red and green, to keep to the more traditional colours but also as the red is a great contrast colour it will show up well on the building. I have also seen from the 'Storm Brewing' video that text only works on the building with a flat surface, as the type will wrap around the buildings designs and may not be seen as well. There are many things to consider when designing my animation however as I have the towers template I shall carefully be placing my animations to co aside with the buildings structure. Talking to David from West End Studios who knows the buildings structure very well I will gain more knowledge on how to place my elements within my animation.
Below are a few projections I have found which focus on high contrast colours. I have found using platform styled games is very popular as it's something everyone can relate to. General game designs have high contrast colours which grab peoples attention alongside with constant moving animation it is made for all age ranges and has shown successful in game purchases. After watching 'Axioma' I found using the buildings features such as windows, doors etc.. is a great way to perform a successful projection through manipulation, therefore I shall be using elements in the tower such as the clock to show off the manipulate my animation.
Your brief is to create a short animation of up to 30 seconds long (no longer). It will form part of a longer animation that tells a story. You will each need to produce a set of storyboards and an animation. The student(s) whose work is selected will then complete one week of work experience with the client at their Eastbourne based studios, working on their project.
Target Market: Families and residents of all ages from Eastbourne and the surrounding area (likely to include young children, so keep the content family friendly). The Plot: ‘Night before Christmas’ poem themed show with added jeopardy. Act 2: You are asked to each design a world that the characters, Tim, Jane and Santa, will have an adventure in. Different worlds: The characters will enter the world and there will be a chase or adventure through the Christmas world of your design. The worlds will be transformative, so each should be created in a completely different style of your imagining. It could be a pixel world, lo-fi world, line drawn world – it’s up to you. You are each asked to design a world of your imagining. Bear in mind that high contrast colours world well, so take this into consideration when you select your colour palette. Also explore the building shape and consider the magic of projection mapping – things can be made to grow, shrink, fall, explode or appear out of nowhere! Consider that the tower that is central to the show – what could you make it do that supports the story? What opportunities does that shape provide? Also consider sound effects and supplementary lighting. Be imaginative and playful, but because this is live brief it is very important that you answer it and stick to the theme, otherwise your work cannot be used. Workshops, lectures, group critiques and tutorials will support your work. |
