Looking at my final project I am overall happy with the outcome, this project allowed me further to explore with photography and filming which is something I find particularly interested in. I also really enjoyed combining my love for my hometown and my passion for dance into one project, I am interested in the stop animation style so am happy this project also let me explore it and also different speeds they can move at.
I would of like to of done more video shoots at different angles as I feel there was still room for exploration and is something I shall keep in mind when managing time in future projects. I would of also liked to explore more into contrast such as day/night, however as sunset was around 3pm in December I did find this hard to accomplish. Overall, I found that using video and other forms of art such as dance is a interesting option to use with graphic design and has allowed me to create more interactive pieces, I do think this is something I would like to continue to explore and feel it would open more options for me progressing as a designer.

I have created a piece for the De La Warr Pavillion, this piece is 1:02 minutes including the credits. I have titled it 'Expression on the Pier' it focuses on celebrating the life and joy a pier brings to a community, combining different art forms such as dance and animation. It is my interpretation of what a pier means to me, allowing people to feel what I feel when thinking of the times I have enjoyed on the Pier. In my video I have used a different combination of sounds: Cool Kids by Billy Early, a seagull flock and the sounds of crashing waves. The music on the video is all royalty free and is a representation of the sounds one would generally here on a pier. I decided to use 'Cool Kids' as it consists of a repetitive beat which builds in pace, this combined with the other sounds I felt gave a indication to the theme and feel it brings the video to life throwing the seaside culture into the animation. I also thought this mixture of sounds was what others would relate to when thinking of a pier, as when I asked some family members of their thoughts as seen in my earlier research I knew this combination of sounds would make them think of a pier.
In this project I want to focus on my idea of the pier, one which is fun and involves the happiness a pier brings to many. Above is a my first video shoot taken in front of the pier, I wanted to see how the colours look from a far distance and how I can incorporate something I find personally satisfying such as dance into my idea of a pier. After this shoot I looked back at the video and thought it may look better at a closer range. Although In this shoot I have the whole of the pier in the video I feel redoing this on the pier would be a better as I feel the angle will be more successful at capturing the elements on a pier including the lights. Starting to work with light I have taken one of the videos from the video shoot and overplayed them with an animation portraying the lights shown behind on the Brighton Pier. I am really enjoying working with this style and would like to continue to use this style, From doing this shoot I will reshoot the video closer to the pier, using the colours from the Pier as inspiration to create my light animation. Today I redid the video shoot on the pier, as it's December the Pier was brightly lit with Christmas lights and decorations. From the first video I decided to get my dancer to dance in a more contemporary style rather than hip hop, Contemporary is a style of dance which uses a mixture of soft and hard movements I will use these elements to recreate the soft movements of the waves and the energy of the pier. ColoursThe Pier's around the UK seem to have one range of colours :yellow, red and blue. I visited the Pier today and took some photos (below) of the main colours which were associated with the area. These colours will be the ones I shall use as my light overlay in my video, these colours will bring out my theme better and allow people to get a better understanding of the animation.
I have started looking into how I want to portray my idea of a pier. I am very fascinated with dance and the culture in Brighton. I feel using dance as a element to promote the liveliness and creativity of the pier will be a successful start to look into considering it's my interpretation. Above are videos/animations of dancers which use the fluidity of light and dance to perform a action/reaction style performance. The top two videos are by Quixotic Fusion, these are a group of artists which use dance, acrobatics and visual effects to perform transporting dance pieces. These were performed at TED2012, TedTalks are conferences which conduct talks on topics with the worlds leading thinkers, the topics consist of a large variety such as science, business and the arts. I would like to start filming different styles of dance such as hip hop, lyrical and contemporary and begin to overlay animations portraying the movement of light which interacts with the dancer(s). I thought it would be interesting to see what other peoples thoughts were of a pier. I was intrigued if they thought of the lights and culture as I was. Below are my findings, I asked two people who have lived in Brighton their whole life, so have a lot of experience with the pier. I can see now that the people on the pier is one that was mentioned and also the lights mixed with the early sunsets. I will like to focus on these elements in my animation as I now know that these are items that come to peoples mind when also thinking of a pier.
Also looking at the responses I have decided to take into consideration the sounds people would hear on the pier for example, seagulls, laughter, slot machines and the sound of the waves crashing. It has been insightful to see others opinions on the subject and I think will help me in my creating process. Living in Brighton, a pier is one of the best attractions a coastal city/town can provide. To me a Pier is timeless and I want to start off this project by looking into the history behind piers. How they have evolved and also the different varieties of piers. To me a pier has always been a structure which starts on land and pans out to sea, it would usually have rides on it and attractions such as food, bars and tourist stalls, however in other areas such as Hastings I can see that isn't the case, it's used as a space for events such as gigs and celebrations. I want to focus on my perception of a pier, one were it celebrates fun and is visually pleasing to look at with all the traditional colours such as blue, red and yellow. First I want to look at Brighton Pier in the day and night and how they become different environments as well as the history of Piers in Sussex. Above is the Brighton Pier in the day, it is a place most people will visit in Brighton and is the main tourist attraction. In contrast is the nightlife on Brighton Pier, it has lights on it until the very end point, the Brighton Pier sign also often changes colours for example recently it shined the pride flag colours on it in celebration of the LGBT community In Brighton. I think the Pier at night defiantly brightens up the city and I feel will be best to focus on it in this scene, due to the lights I feel it creates a great contrast and would be a good place to start by looking at Piers which also brighten up their areas in the night. Exploring PiersThe Brighton Palace Pier opened in 1899 and by 1905 it began it's collection of amusement machines. Now in 2018 the Pier has over 15 rides and other attractions such as the 'place of fun', 'the dome', side shows and concession stands. Looking into other Piers I have found some which have similar assets as the Brighton Pier and are known for the entertainment which takes place on there.
Brief: Make a short film that conjures up your idea of a pier. If your idea of a pier a place of adventure, coming of age, romance, dazzling engineering, ghosts of the past, a misspent youth, melancholy, or something else altogether? The selected films will be screened at the De La Warr Pavilion, and a cash prize of £300 will be awarded to the winning entrant.
