This is my final placemat, I included a range of food and sea creatures such as: Octopus, Shrimp, Fish, Chips, Sausages and lobster. I added a font which I had found from a pirate map and thought this was suitable for this pirate themed placemat. I also recreated the toddler 'Rex' as a pirate which an eye patch and a skeleton themed bib. I am overly happy with this final outcome as I hadn't drawn animals before so this was a chance to draw them and incorporate my style into this short exciting project. I will print a total of 20 A3 copies in to be handed out at Hi-Fest, if it's successful I may even use this idea of creating placemats a little hobby and create different styles to see where this project can go.

I decided to make a Pirate themed placemat, as Hastings is known for its Pirate day in summer I thought this would be a great relation to incorporate in my placemat. I also decided to use a character, his called Pirate Rex and as his a toddler I thought it would attract children as they would see someone their age and all the fun sea animals and use mine to draw on. Below is the image I made into the pirate I used in the placemat, I redrew him along with all my underwater characters.
These are three examples I found of children's placemats, I find most of these to overcrowded however the top one is a lot more simple. I took most of my inspiration from the top image, I like the way it's simply designed and the way its the food has been drawn. As this is aimed at children I do think tricky puzzles will not be a good idea, I would much prefer the placemat to be simple and fun! and to just enjoy colouring it in.
This project gave us an opportunity to pick from multiple things we were allowed to create for HiFest, below is the list
I was told to design a paper children's placemat, this was going to be distributed around some of the local food venues and cafes. It needed to be an A3 landscape and black and white as it was made to be coloured in. The theme had to be food related and fun for children so I thought making a character would be a good idea as well. |
