Below is the final product from this project. It shows the fully printed and bound version, it allows people to see the way the I made the pages and how they show a relation to each other such as food on the pages, a group of people, a image based more on scenery etc. I am really happy with my final outcome, this being my first project I enjoyed being able to explore my original style and learning what makes style individual. If I continued with this project I would like to spend more time on the complexity of each Zine and focus on drawing people in scenery rather than one or the other.

So last year I did a project which consisted of me making a 16 page book with two signatures showing off Hip Hop culture along with photography and famous urban culture quotes I found off songs and documentaries. As I was already knowledgable about how they work, creating one was no issue. We learnt many way to create the Zine however as mine was a very neat set up I did use professional printing methods and bound it using a stapler to make the attachment very subtle rather than using thread which can be quite messy, especially when you have to glue the ends and have a cover to hide the making process. Above is a image of me working out how the page layout works so I can have similar images on the same page.
This is the rough sketch of the back cover. A image of me , along with a few paragraphs about me and another about what my Zine is about. On the right is a image of the final back page.
This is a rough idea of what I wanted my front cover to look like, a hand drawn heart with 'A Day In Hastings' written inside along with a outline of Hastings coast line at the bottom.
Although I could of spent slightly longer on the detail of this illustration, which is something I most likely will redo/develop I found the Giddyup Std Regular font was perfect for this! the playful feel on the ice cream kiosk along with two older people looking on their phone just seemed so sweet that I thought a girly styled curvy font would be ideal. The word 'selfie' is used a lot in modern day society especially in social media, populated by tumblr and instagram by those 'hippie/indie girls' and made a very stereotypical font a easy choice for this page.
This is my only page in my Zine which does not have any physical character in it. It consists of only buildings and a washing line, I felt this quite personal display of someones private washing was in such a open space was a rather interesting sight and think having a classic 1950's style font of 'It's washing day' fitted in rather well. In old styled movies they always seem to have a house wife of some sort hanging the washing out, and thought that it had a rather classical feel to Hastings, especially as this was pictured in the old town.
Baskerville Semibold is my chosen font for this Zine page, it uses a partially bold font which I feel could relate to her frustration of her looking for her cigarettes. I have placed it at a slight angle as I thought this fitted in more with the page due to the backdrop having a curved angle which curves to the right.
So this illustrations I would of said is one of my most interesting ones, the original scene was two woman working with a school for special needs and carrying a younger girl across the road via locking their arms to her. She kept trying to run away and this is why they had to do so, I felt it would be interesting to take this out of context and see it maybe from the girls side, the way she's trying to get away and forcibly being told not to do so. I felt Perpetua titling MT Bold suited this scene as it is a very powerful text and I wanted to make a statement which perhaps the girl was trying to do. I have positioned it on the page so the E slightly goes onto the background of the poles sticking upwards from the floor, I felt like this was a good place to position it as it makes people look closer at the photo to realise the centre person is actually being dragged.
This font I used was very calming, when looking at it I imagined it being part of a advert for a company like Apple where there promotions are usually very calming and modern. When people are concentrating and someone distracts them people usually get very rowdy, However when trying to stay still people try and be as calm as possible when telling people that they are busy, I felt Helvetica Neue Ultralight helped me portray this story I had found, as well as Helvetica being one of the mostly used fonts I thought it would make the image become more recognisable.
When I took this image the lady in the photo seemed to be having some form of back trouble, I thought it would be a good idea to use a powerful, bold font that would make you think she was in agony, I felt Futura Condensed was very striking and helped me create this image. The more i'm going through this project I am realising the power font can create and how it can make one scene seem very different when using different types.
This font Dancing Script really had a classical feel to it, it looked elegant but in some form had a sensual feel with the way the the words connected. To me I imagined a escort writing love letters to all her employe, I thought this font would be perfect for my "I do love page three" image as I've seen in the media they have tried so hard banning these pages, however to the girls who photograph for them they probably see themselves in a very different light to some who may read their section.
The image that goes with this font is a photo of a young man enjoying a KFC along the pathway to the Old Town. I wanted to use a font which gave a cute, valentine styled feel which would relate 'love' with 'KFC'. I think this really suits this page in my Zine and gives it a friendly feel in comparison to his facial expression where he looks rather confused/concentrating.
This "I feel a breeze" quote goes along with my builders bum photo, the tightly closed font relates to how I feel when I get a breeze, the feeling of wanting to bunch up and hold in that shiver. I thought this would go along classically with my image along with my light blue colours which has the frosty feeling I was aiming for.
I took a picture on the streets of Hastings of a man happily enjoying a alcoholic beverage from a bottle outside the food store Iceland. I proceeded to do some research into alcohol fonts, finding out that most of the type used are very bold and striking. As alcohol isn't usually something that i've seen be promoted I thought instead of taking a really serious look at these fonts why not still use a striking one but one which humorously relates to the effects of the beverage. I found this font called happy happy joy joy and thought the way the letters have been made wonky as if the font was drunk would be a good relation to my image and stood out very much on my light orange background, which I choose as a lot of alcohol colours such as beer and cider traditionally are a brown/orange colour.
When I originally saw this woman at the bus stop for some reason she really reminded me of a school teacher. I had seen three of the teachers at Brighton University take the train/bus to work and I had this story in my head that everyday she took the bus to the Primary School and taught children. As I had this story in my head I felt using a kids style font would be ideal, this font "Chalk It Up" was perfect as it gave the Zine a childlike feature, even the fact that I did not use a capital I in the word I've, purposely gave this even more of a fun and playfulness feel.
When walking around Hastings and learning about the culture I really found the area reminded me of a Treasure Map. The Smugglers Cave and the way the pathways connect in the Old Town felt like they sound be written all down into a Old English map. This Zine of a old man on his scooter who had lost his wife reminded me of how you could easily run away through the pathways, and this is when I decided I wanted to choose a font which had a feel like it was being read from a map. This font "Santos Dumont" reminded me of this perfectly and the fact its not all fully connected gave the feeling that some parts of the font was missing itself.
Originally I choose Edwardian Script for all my pages in my Zine, However I have decided to choose specific type for each individual page in my Zine. I want the Font to represent the thought I had when I originally created my Zines, for example this font called "I tell you all my secrets" (created by junkohanhero) felt very similar to my original thought. The phrase "Where's your head at?" came to me as it reminded me of the 2001 popular song by Basement Jaxx, it related well to my context as the image I had drawn was taken from a bus stop where half of a poster had been ripped looking like there was a headless woman sitting at the bus stop. I also choose this font as the song that reminded me of my image is a very powerful song and I felt this strong font related very well to it, as well as the fact the A in head had been removed, almost looking like the headless woman.
I stumbled across this artist living in Brighton recently , her names Angela Chick. She's a illustrator who creates a series of illustrations and generates them into greeting cards. She gets her printed at my families printing business in the North Lanes in Brighton and I found her work looked quite similar to mine for this project. Although she does not usually draw people like I am currently doing, her loose style and pastel based colours could only remind me of this project and may look into more of her work to help me along my way.
I originally decided to combine two project suggestions - overheard in Hastings and People.
Overheard In Hastings- record conversations overheard in a cafe or at a bus stop. Present them typographically or add your own illustrations. People- Have you heard of Humans of New York - a 'collection' of people living and working in the city. Why not Humans of Hastings? After walking around Hastings for three hours I sadly came to conclusion that there was not many interesting conversations happening... This is when I decided to come up with humorous commentary to peoples photos and/or coming up with quotes of what they could be thinking. I feel this is a lot more the Humans on New York which initially began in 2010 as a photography project. their initial goal was take 10,000 photographs of New Yorkers on the street though became a amazing blog which has the persons photography along with many great short stories about their lives. I have decided to do something similar although the portraits will be digitally drawm images of mainly people and some scenery referencing to what they are doing in humorous context. This is the beginning of my Zine creation, Showing my journey of the people I found in Hastings, this guy was walking towards the old town eating a KFC, I am going to make various versions of this until I come up with a final design which I feel suits the simplicity and uniqueness of Hastings.
This is a Zine from the previous year , Her work was about feminism in Celebrities and quotes they have said to do with Feminism. I am using her style in my project by doing a illustration along with a quote or narration, this is going to be my initial idea, I also really like the use of colour in her work and feel using pastel colours as a background would be a interesting contrast with my white silhouettes.
These are a few of my photos which I am going to use to create my Zine, I have chosen a total of 14 images, I may cut these down but these were my favourite ones that I feel I could have a interesting narrative. Next I am going to start my illustrations and see which typography I feel are suited to them.
Last week me and my friend Lukas went around Hastings and took many photos. During this day I mainly focused on capturing photos of people who I thought could have a humorous story narrated to their image. I looked for those who would generally have a good story either in or not in context and I plan to create little illustrations capturing these unique people in form of a Zine along with humorous typography.
