To finish off my project I have written a App Definition Statement, this is a concise, concrete declaration of an app’s main purpose and its intended audience. I am happy with how my app turned out and it gave me an insight into creating something that combined a digital app with a passion of mine. If I was to redo this project I think I may of detailed more complexity in the app such as little characters for your profile. I did find this app allowed me to produce a logo as a EPS file using a more advanced software than I am use to (Illustrator) and improve my skills in this. I also have an insight in the basis of how to create an app and the process of elimination for allow the app to succeed. App Definition Statement Treble is an app that identifies music playing in real time to locate all styles of dance videos on the internet. This app is aimed at dancers, especially those who are looking for choreography inspiration to a specific song. It is easy to navigate so can be used by most ages. Within this app you can also share and save your favourite videos you have found, this app can communicate with Twitter and Facebook where the user can share the videos on their profile. The app is very simplistic and is ideal of those seeking for quick, fast and straight forward access to dance videos.

After reflecting at the apps design I want to use this font 'Giddyup' This is one of the original fonts I looked at, after some feedback from my tutor we agreed this font has a much stronger relation to my logo as it uses the curves I used for the music note. I want to keep to these bold blue and red colours as I feel these are complimentary colours which have not been used together in any well established current apps. Blue is also well known as the popular colour for phone apps as it reflects the colour of day time and is prone to keep users more alert.
Below are the beginning options within the app, when the app is launched I have created two options of the opening page (top left and top centre) these include the steps 'FIND, SAVED, SHARE' starting off with find when pressed it will take you to the next step (top right), from here you can hold down this logo and it will listen to the music played. I have used the song Bariter Cardi by Cardi B as an example to show how the app would work. On the left below I have shown the next following page after the app has located your music, it shows how many dances it has found and lists them underneath from most viewed to least viewed. From this you can click a video of your choice (right below) on here you have the options to save or share the video. The Share option within the app allows the user to share the video they have found on common apps such as Facebook and Twitter, it also allows you to send it over text to a friend. Within this app you can save your videos that you like a have an area which shows all the videos you have located within the app. I have not made this app overly complicated, my main reason for this is that when creating choreography I know people want to locate and watch videos as quickly as they can, I feel if there was a lot of options within this app it would not be as accessible for quick use and therefore want it to be as straight forward as possible.
Below I have attached a very quick video of how the pages will load when you a holding pressure on your screen load dances from the song being played. Experimenting with animation to create a potential process within this app is helping me get an idea of how the app can work and Is something I would like to continue. Below are three fonts which I think would be a successful choice for the app, I like the simplicity of the bottom two as it's easy to read and Is not like any other font's I have seen currently being used for popular apps. I am also considering Giddyup which is the font at the top of the image below, this one would work in with my current logo design as it compliments the curves in the lace of the music note. However I am unsure to use this one as it is quite 'girly' and feel it may not relate well to the original idea behind the app which focuses more of styles of dance like Hip Hop which is a hard hitting style. I think I will continue with 'Toronto Gothic' the bottom font, then after feedback from my tutors and peers I will be able to conclude if this is the font to proceed with.
Music Identification Apps I found some apps which use a music identification process, Starting off with Shazam this app launched in 2012 , if you hold down on the app when a song is playing in real time it can locate the name and artist of the song. I want to replicate this process but instead of finding the origin of the song it will find all dance videos online that include said song.
I also came across SoundHound 8! This app is very similar Shazam however I feel like this is slightly more sophicated. This app can connect with Youtube, Apple Music and Spotify allowing its users to create playlists through the app of all the music you have found. The founders of SoundHound have also launched an app called Hound. this app is a lot more detailed than standard voice recognition such as Siri and Google, it can answer multiple questions and always gives a detailed response as you can see my the video on the bottom right. I think seeing these options and the layouts these apps use will help me develop my own app.
I have made this mind map following my ideas for the App Design. I want to focus on something I think would be helpful in my life, for example having an app which allows access to dance videos including a specific song after hearing it in real time. Below I have explored my initial ideas, including colour options, names for the apps and logo ideas.
In a keynote address in January 2007 Steve Jobs of Apple computers introduced the original iPhone with the words "today, Apple is going to reinvent the phone”. Ten years later millions (and millions) of us are on smart phones and tablets interacting socially, and globally, with lightning speed thanks to a small icon we tap on a touch sensitive screen.
We reach for a device that not only puts the world at our fingertips but can connect us across the continents in seconds. It hooks us into games, social media, news, blogs, utilities, video, music, film, in fact an inexhaustible list of things is accessible with just the tap of a finger. For a generation, post 2007, they’re just another part of the world they are born into - it doesn’t take long to find articles about ‘best baby apps’ on the internet. In this project we’re going to focus on one type of app, but the most used, social media. Following the briefing you are to design a social media app brand, focussing on the app idea and function, the content, and finally the icon (in at least three sizes demonstrating usability/scalability at both app store and small screen size). You will also provide up to 6 sample screen shots of your app (no less than four) within a smartphone or tablet template. These however can be arranged as appropriate, (for example refer to YCN to see how apps have been presented previously). It can be a solely a communication/sound/visual based app and may include common features and app iconography (such as the UI, menu icons etc). Alternatively it could be something more abstract or unusual with an element of discovery and not include obvious scroll/menu icons but challenge the user to explore the app experience. The emphasis is on social not individual but it doesn’t mean the social group would have to be large, in fact it could be a very niche app. So if you have an original innovative idea for a social media app by all means take that direction, don’t get too bogged down in the function as these apps aren’t to be coded - although you can also use Adobe Xd to display the app as a functioning sequence ( for those who haven’t used it before we will be looking at Adobe XD software and how you can send your app design prototype to an iPhone or iPad from your lap top). The focus here is equally on icon and brand design as well as to a narrative content, what can you bring that’s new, it could it also be a journey of surprising discovery. Equally, how is your logo going to stand out in the crowded app market place, when designing the app logo demonstrate the working and reason behind the design in sketch and research work. Whether your app would be popular in the marketplace should not concern you either, it could be an app for a very particular market, then more original the better! If you are going to take on a more mainstream social media activity then you will need to bring something new to the design look and user interface – we’re not looking to replicate what’s already out there. When designing consider aspects such as your icon/brand scalability too? Does it look good against different colours and backgrounds? Does it have recognisability amidst the noise of the app store? Does it connect emotionally? Does it have originality? Will it appeal to the demographic you are pitching to? In this brief you will need to demonstrate considerations of icon or logotype design, fonts, and colour palette with regard to the above. Consider too your methods, if your direction is illustration then why not have illustrative icons and menus? Importantly the brief requires that you show your ideas process from referencing to sketch books and finally an app definition statement should be provided in the final presentation. |
