Jeremy HarnellLooking at other artists I saw Jeremy Harnell who is a Californian graphic designer who is now based locally in Sussex. As I have been looking mainly at photographers I wanted to look at designers who focused on bikes and poster design. I like the way he focuses on contemporary art using bold colours and abstract designs. I feel this minimal concept will work well with my project, as I want it to have a simplistic look. I am using similar block colours to provide a professional contemporary outcome rather than the standard designs for bikers where it is a bit rough looking. Russell BurtonResearching into photographers I concentrated on Russell Burton. He focuses on travel, landscape ,scenery and sports events such as cycling and racing. His photos mainly focus on capturing the essence of a racer in a variety of different landscapes. Mountains are a big focus with Burtons photography which I feel is a great place to capture bikers as it focuses on natural trail paths. I feel Clapham woods is a great place as it also focuses on a natural forest environment. Looking at Burtons image I think the time of day has a great affect on his work as they create a focal point on his work, for example below on the top left image the sunset creates an atmosphere, allowing the viewer to get a feel for the photo. I think these close up shots will be a better style for my booklet as the area i'm photographing isn't as large as the environments Milner shoots and therefore think Burtons style would be more successful on capturing the perfect photos. Dan MilnerLooking into photographers I focused on artists like Dan Milner who travels around the world photographing places such as Arctic Svalbard where it's polar bear inhabited and Afghanistan where he captured a pioneering bike trip. Below are two images which captured moments from the bike rides his photographed. I felt these focused on the surrounding area as well as the bikers and has shown me an element which i'd like to implement into my own work. Milner has said how he has a "desire to look beyond the safe, predictable and mundane, and to include a little thought provocation in my images and films". I feel very inspired by his travels to capture such environments and shows how a photograph can capture what you choose it to. I want my images to be very contemporary and polished such as Milners are. I feel key factors to these techniques is the angle I choose to capture each moment as well as the weather will impact how the images are portrayed due to the impact natural light and the quality of the environment will have on my final outcome. Brief
During the summer you are required to work independently on a project entitled ‘The Edge’. This project can take any form of digital graphic design, for example, it might be an animation, a series of gifs, an animated poster, a book, a magazine, a typeface, or even a collection of photographs. It’s up to you! Think carefully about the final format of your work and how you will present it. Ideas The brief has inspired me to focus on physical activities that take place over summer such as: biking. I want to focus on photography along with a professional approach to market design, looking into promotion of a popular bike track and courses available for beginners. I am going to start this project by looking at previous photographers who specialize in travel and sport. I think looking into their techniques are styles of image creation I will become more focused on the layouts when it comes to my own photoshoot. Location The location I have decided to photograph bikers is Clapham Woods also known as 'Spooks'. This is a woodland area in West Sussex, the land is owned by a local farmer who allowed the bikers to create tracks and jumps in a particular area allocating for the activity. Clapham Woods does have a unusual backstory with known sightings of satanic groups, animals becoming unwell and four deaths between 1972 and 1981. These unusual activities as well as UFO sightings are the reason this area is known as 'Spooks'. Although, this is known for being a haunted area to the groups of bikers it's a very pleasant location which is easily accessible and feels very welcoming. The Edge booklet will promote the area for it's popularity and the thrill the groups get for having a small community which shares the same passion.
